Why did snape call Lilly a "mudblood" if he was apparently in love with her?Why did no1 kno they were friends?

It's was Dumbledore's plan to make everyone think Snape was bad. He didn't want anyone to know he was good because then the Death Eaters wouldn't have trusted him.
