What made Atticus Finch and Mrs. Dubose courageous in To Kill a Mockingbird?

I also vaguely recall my Freshman English teacher making the point that Atticus's view of courage is about morals, rather than the children's view of heroics being his bravery in shooting the mad dog. Think we had to do a compare/contrast thing, don't know if that helps.
