Why is it that when the left hemisphere of the brain is working, the right part of the body is the one working

It isn't. The left hemisphere is used more for linear, sequential and mathematical tasks and the right hemisphere for more visual, colour, creative hands on tasks.Most people can be right or left hemisphere dominant but we work and learn best when both hemispheres are engaged.
